Carmen Jacob's son was born in 2011, a healthy boy, with no signs of any illness or disability. As he grew up, his health became a concern as his mother noticed that he reached his milestones later than what would have been expected.
Cellan was taken to a pediatrician who suspected Bekkers / Duchenne and sent Cellan for some tests. In November 2017 his test results came back with a CK count of over +-1900, which confirmed that he had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which is one of the most severe inherited muscular dystrophies and will lead to progressive muscle fibre degeneration. Essentially his muscles will slowly deteriorate until it becomes fatal. He was diagnosed at age six.
Steroid treatment and physiotherapy can only delay the onset of the worst of his symptoms until he is in his twenties. Since his diagnosis, Cellan has been receiving his treatments at Red Cross children's hospital (RXH165961 772) and sees a local Pediatrician (Dr Tonken) every few months. In April 2020 Cellan became non-ambulatory, which means he became unable to walk. He has been making use of a wheelchair ever since. This allows him some dignity and independence while the disease continues to rob him of his mobility.
This initiative was started to help Carmen raise funds to purchase a new wheelchair that Cellan desperately needed. Thanks to our staff and Partners, we were able to help purchase a new wheelchair for Cellan.
